Minimum Outboard HP For 16' To Pull A Skier?

Just bought a 16' open bow with a 1975 Evinrude 115 HP. Motor appears to need some work (starter, water pump, ???) and in the meantime I found a Mercury 65 HP in good shape that I can buy at a decent price. Would the Mercury be adequate to pull a skier on a 16 footer (and money better spent) or am I better putting my money into repairing the Evinrude 115? Any opinion welcomed! Thanks in advance!

NO NO NO!! that Merc is almost half the horsepower of that rude. Spend some cash getting the Evinrude fixed up and it will give you years of great service.

might be able to get up on a pair of skis if skier is not to heavy, under 150lbs but solom would be a chore a best the 115 would be a better bet.

A 65hp on that boat would be lucky to get it on plane very fast, let alone pull a skier with any luck, i would fix the evinrude and then go for the gusto.

I totally agree with most of the comments made here. I would fix the 115. But I disagree with Bass Runners comment "A 65hp on that boat would be lucky to get it on plane very fast, let alone pull a skier with any luck" My parents had a 1967 Glaspar 16' with a '67 Merc 650 (65hp) and we pulled 2 adults on single skis, true it wouldn't pop them out, but they weren't drug too long. I have video of it. My boat now doesn't have that kind of problem. 16' Glastron with a Merc 140hp.

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=13003&sort=7&thecat=500&password=

Craig
