minkota steering

I have an minkota edge 45 trolling motor and it is connected to foot controls for steering and power. The foot controls plug into the power outlet near the bow. My question is can put a handle on this motor and steer it with my hand or will this mess up the foot controls ? Or can I just add a handle and electrically connect it straight into the outlet ? I guess I would need some other type of controls for speed and forward and reverse.

I want to add a handle so that I can manually steer it onto my trailer.

You can add a hand control on the head unit to steer. But how are you using the trolling motor to steer onto a trailer? Is this a bow mount or transom mount. I hope a transom mount. Otherwise I can't see how you are steering onto a trailer. :noidea:

Good question, GM. All I can envision is busted TM props and bent shafts with a bow mounted TM.

GM yes this is a bow mount I have also raised this question also concerning using a trolling motor to steer onto a trailer. What do you do on a lake that is electric only and have a bow mounted trolling motor. One answer was NOT to lock the down the trolling motor when driving up onto the trailer and pulling it up quickly when you get very close.

Okay so it is a bow mount. I too think you either pull the TM up, just in time, or use the winch stray to finish loading the boat. If you don't get the TM out of the way, you better be good at replacing the shaft and prop. Because I see that happening in your future. JMHO!

I have an extra stern mount TM I use just for that purpose when I go to a TM only lake.

That's the way to do it. Pick a cheapie on CL and a battery.

I just don't see using a bow mount to load damage free.

I was thinking the same thing to get an extra trolling motor and stern mount it and then I would not have to worry about it.

One more vote to get a tiller motor for the stern, you will find you use it for more than just loading too.
