Hi All,
New here and have tried to search thru old posts with regard to my question and have found nothing. Is anyone familiar with this "breakaway" feature with minn kota's trolling motors. Twice now "the capitan" has hit a rock and the trolling motor popped right out of the mount. He made a tool in order to compress that spring inside and get it back in. However, this is impossible to do while out on the water and considering we are in a resivour with nothing left to get us to shore it's concerning. Is the trolling motor supposed to just sway from side to side and that is the breakaway feature. Or is it supposed to pop out like that and be rendered useless for the rest of the day. Thank goodness we don't have to bring it to a marina and pay to have it set back in. But now he wants to weld a piece of something to the top so it doesn't happen again and I'm thinking if it has no opportunity to pop out if you did hit something ex...rock....concrete boat ramp it would really just crack the arm in half or whatever. What's the deal with this? Anyone know? Thanks, Tracy

Well, I'll take a stab at this one. Nobody else will maybe because like me, they are having a hard time figuring out what you are saying.

First: I never heard of a break away trolling motor. Seems silly to make something that will render you helpless out on the water.

Second: Why would a motor sway when you are trying to be accurate with your boat so you can catch fish. I would like to hear what Bill Dance would say.

Third and last: Does welding come with the installation directions with motor and mount? No? I didn't think so. Have you tried taking it to a reputable dealer to find out? Or trying to email the manufacurer for an answer?

You have an interesting problem. I wish you luck with it and ask to keep me posted. Any pics?

Thanks for the reply and yes, maybe I didn't make myself clear. Let me try and explain. It's a typical m.k. pro maxx bow mount with foot control....any pics you see in catalogs will show the swaying of the shaft. I guess what I'm talking about is the bwoguard 360 breakaway mount. However , considering I am new at all this and not familiar with all the names of the parts...I don't really know what the hell I am talking about. It's the big screw thing inside the open plastic part.. at the top of the shaft. It just pops out of the plastic thing. Needless to say i have not been driving while this happened and it's has only happened twice. It was working fine on saturday but I didn't hit anything either. But where we are YES, we are useless on the water if this does occurr considering we are not permitted to use a gas motor. So it's rowing a 3000lb boat back to the ramp. I appreciate the help and will let you know what happens. I'll have to call a dealer or mk themselves. I didn't know if this was normal and I don't have a manual for it. Sucks to be me.
Also.........NO it does not say to weld anything....but you tell the guy I bought the boat with NOT to weld anything to it.... after all I'm just "a broad" who doesn't hit rocks and ramps when she drives and is just trying to do the right thing (:)

It sounds almost like the big bolt with a knurled head on it that goes through the retaining collar on the motor may be stripped and gets forcibly pulled out when you hit something. I had one of those motors for several years and am not aware of any "break away" feature. The part I'm talking about is a large collar that holds the shaft in place but can be unbolted to remove the motor from the boat without taking the entire mount off.

Yes, yes..........that's it......what's the deal with that? You're saying the retaining collar is stripped?
