Minn Kota Endura 36 struggling!! Help!

I've had this Endura 36 for about 4 years now and it never gave me any problems, until about two months ago it started making a nasty grinding sound when it was running, but then when you put the speed to 5 it would sometimes go back to sounding just the same. I figured it could have fishing string in the prop so took the prop off and there was a little nest that I cleared with no problem, but it still was making a grinding noise, and then just couldn't turn the motor (but you could hear it trying to crank over). I went back and took the actual motor out, and it was completely filthy, with corrosion and oxidation on the copper EVERYWHERE. I washed what I could, put it back together, and it still just couldn't turn over, even with a fully charged battery. Any help would be greaty appreciated. I really don't want to have to buy a new motor, much less send it to a repair shop (might as well get a new Motorguide 30 for $100)

Thanks, Stu

you're right, time to replace, the nest ate the seal on the shaft. if you are boating in brackish or salt water, you need a salt water motor.

Ok well the saltwater engines are really out of my price range....I couldn't run the MotorGuide 30 in brackish water?

Chances are the water intrusion has eaten either or both bearings as well -- hence the noise. So when power is applied the armature is simply sucked against the windings and the motor stalls. In other words, its become a big electro-magnet rather than a motor. It can certainly be fixed, but it will likely cost more than a new motor.
