I took my 12' tin boat out today after restoring the '79.
I have a new MK Endura C2, a 40# unit on it.
The transition between any speed 1-4 is very smooth. But 4 to 5 is quite a bump in speed, is that normal?
I can go from 1 to 3 or even 4 and it seems I have more increase in thrust from 4 to 5 by far.

Five is wide open so it will have the most oomph! Not unusual at all. You rarely use #5 when fishing unless you need to make a quick correction or otherwise move quickly. Speeds less than wide open are set for fine-tuning the trolling speed. I've had trolling conditions were just a couple tenths of a MPH made a difference in the walleye bite. Speed, the lure, and depth all determine whether you are successful or not. Wide open is probably not the proper speed for any trolling except if you are trying to anger a musky or pike and are dragging a big red-eye, Daredevil, etc, and if that's the case, the big motor is a better choice for speed trolling.

I guess that makes sense and why so many lower speeds with little affect on speed, very little, but detectable.
I was just shocked when I went from 4-5 though, quite a change.
I will assume that this is in the design on purpose.

Perfectly normal, just the way all of the speed coil TM's I've had worked.

The only time I'm at speed #5 is setting the hook long-line trolling. Get a hit and immediately jam the TM to speed #5, it takes all the slack out of the line and drives the hook home. Though, I'm not fishing for trout,,, I'm fishing for what eats trout :D

I have a Bow Mount Minn Kota I bought last year that is the same way. If you kick it on in 5 and the motor is directed side ways it will almost throw you from the boat. The only time I use 5 is to quckly get to another spot without firing up the big motor. I try not to do that because I forgot to turn it down and about threw myself from the boat. I have heard Motor Guide is the same way.
