I dont post much as i usually find most of my answers through the search.

I have 2006 MK PD 55# with universal sonar, I connected a Lowrance HDS-5 to the universal sonar with a adapter cable. All works pretty well, however there is a setting for choosing a transducer in the Lowrance HDS. I looked on the internet and found that the MK transducer is a single beam 196hz + or - 6hz.

Does anybody know what the setting should be set to on the Lowrnace? There are alot of Generics with different hz options, most dual hz.

Also if anybody else has any settings for this sonar on the Lowrance (sensitivity, ping.....) to get the best presentation would be appreciated.

BTW, really like the Lowrance HDS unit so far. Thanks for any help.

Paul

Added Minn Kota universal sonar as I wasn't specific. Also, any HDS user and their settings would be appreciated. Hopefully this info will help generate some replies. Thanks

Well, your universal sonar transducer isn't so universal.

The 192 kHz transducer was Lowrance proprietary. Lowrance has since seen the light and went to industry standard 200 kHz on the HDS series. Your 192 kHz transducer will work on 200 kHz but the results would be less than optimal.

Re: Minn Kota Universal Sonar and Lowrance HDS

After lots of searching I finaly found some help. Looks like the proper setting is the generic 200hz 1000w RMS. Before this information I was using the unknown setting. I also set the keel depth to +1. This is the setting for the transducer being under water for a more accurate depth reading. Now I want to mess with the color palate. Maybe this info can help others as it wasn't the easiest info to find.

here's a good starting point for setting.

ping speed 18-19
color line 72
noise reduction low
surface clutter low
sensitivity manaully 74-82

put your unit in shallow mode if you fishing freshwater.

Jason, thanks for the input. Do you agree with the transducer setting? I have not been out on the water since I switched it.

You transducer is a 600W unit at best. Probably less. Why did think you need to use 1000W setting instead of the generic 200kHz which would most likely default to 600W?

Dingbat, that is why I originally asked. I had no idea what I have, that's why I left it on the "unknown" selection. Your original response did not answer my question. I don't believe I have a setting for 600hz. Just looking to get the best I can with what I have.

There are two components to a transducer. The first is its transmission frequency. This is a measure of the length of the sound wave it produces. Your transducer is transmitting at 192 kHz. The HSD does not support 192 kHz so you?re going to have a bit of an impedance mismatch to deal with. It will still work, just not as well as if you had a 200 kHz transducer hooked to the unit.

The second is the power of the sound wave it produces which is typically measured in watts RMS. We don?t know the power rating of your transducer but the chances of it being more than 600watts are nil. You don?t see transducers greater than 600W until you get into the high performance stuff. I have a 1,000 Watt fish finder on my boat and the transducer alone was over $700.

Having said that, you want to use the generic 200 kHz setting with your transducer

Thank you for the explanation, I will see what other standard 200hz options there are.
