I have a 97 baja 208 islander with a 454 carb engine. I use a mirage plus 23 pitch prop that came with the boat . It has vent holes it is solid pluged now . The boat will blowout easy. Should I try to vent the prop? Also has anyone used a ballistic prop?

Re: mirage plus vent hole vs ballistic prop

Hmm. As removing the plugs is easy and free, why not do the test?<br /><br />Let us have some more info on your speed, rpm at wot, trim and other setup details.<br /><br />"Blowout".. please describe how and when it happens? Sometimes ventilating happens when trimming or cornering but it's more common with outboards.<br /><br />The Mirage isn't a bad prop. Is it in good shape?<br />If you lack grip (that is if your motor revs up and the prop is spinning but the boat is not moving), other prop designs should be considered. Merc's 5 blade HiFive, for one.

The prop is in great shape. The ventiling happens in cornering at low speed with the trim just up a little. I know the mirage + has very little cupping .

I had a similar issue that was solved completely by the HighFive. I can now corner and trim to my hearts desire.<br /><br />I takes some more info about your setup to give further advice. A good prop shop will lend you test props to help you buy only one.

Take the plugs out, one at a time, and test.<br />Merc is superior to Ballistic in every way.<br />Trim in (bow down) when you turn at planing speed.
