Hey guys i was wondering if anyone has ever used the pvc trim board for a transom repair. I am replacing the transom on the boat and just looking for a good option without going to the marine grade plywood. What do you think. thanks

I used a PVC trim board for my dash for my last boat. In that application is was great. However is has NO strength for a transom at ALL. Stick with plywood. Properly sealed, regular exterior grade will be fine.

Ayuh,... Not arguin' yer point, but don't shoot the material, as about Anything is Possible...

For instance,...
My 12'er Mirrocraft uses a simple 2x4, stuffed inside an aluminum box at the transom to mount the motor on....
The 2x4 Only serves to support the aluminum against being crushed by the motor clamps....

You Could form up a 2x4 outa most Anything to do the job...
Including that Pvc stuff, laminated together with resins, 'n glass...

Just sayin'.... ;)

Don't know about SeaCast for a tinny??? Just stick with the plywood, it's cheap. Seal it up good and install it, you'll be fine for years to come. You can seal it will polyester resin and mat or just a good coat of epoxy resin alone. (Did I just suggest epoxy?)

Re: Mirrocraft transom repair

well the end result was some oak plywood with a few coats of outdoor protector stuff from the depot. Looks real nice and I am sure it will outlast me. Replaced all the hardware on the back of the boat with stainless and will put a spacer between the motor brackets and the wood so it will not destroy my nice wood job. probably into it for about 125.00 Small price to pay to fix a free boat. Thanks for your comments

What Kind of "Outdoor Protector Stuff"?? If you're talking about something like Thompsons water seal then I hate to be the bearer of bad news but... In a Marine Use it will barely last a year. You will Need to coat it REGULARLY if you don't want the plywood to start to delaminate.

Sorry didn't even notice post #8, but Wood is right on about that. Also you said oak plywood from Lowes? Good stuff but not exterior rated. Really should have used some epoxy or poly and mat on it.

Re: Mirrocraft transom repair

Actually used an outdoor polyurethane to seal the wood. Used 2 coats. I guess I will see how long it lasts. If I get a few years out of it then that is good enough for me. All stainless hardware now so it should come off very easily if I need to do it again.
