I recently purchesed a 1986 90 hp Mecury Engine. I had the enginge checked out and the compression test went fine. The only problem was that when the engine was running it was missing a little above idle. The previous owner had the carburators rebuilt around 6 months ago. So I took it out and ran some carb cleaner through the fuel system and nothing changed. I talked with the person who done the carburator rebuild and he told me that the lambert seals needed to be replaced on the motor. The motor looks brand new like it had been sitting up for a while in the garage. The mech. that did the buyers check thinks we can get it back running great with a carburator rebuild. Is there something physical you would see if the lambert seal went out on  the moter. This is my first boat and I'm not sure which way to go.

Run your engine 25:1. If the seals are bad...this will help to seal them and the engine should run better.

^ That is the test.

TMD

How long should I run it at 25/1 ? Should I still get the carburator rebuilt? Will this fix the leak if there is on on the lambert sill for good or is this a temp. fix.

I am afraid it will not fix the problem, just proves that the seals are bad.

If it works, you can run the engine at 25:1 but it will eventually carbon up and can cause more damage in time.

TMD
