Just bought a "new to me" SeaRay with twin 5.7 Mercruisers. I noticed the Starboard motor has two belts but the Port side only has one. Not sure why???? Power steering?? Alternator????

Any ideas? (If one belt is truely missing, there is no sign of it in the engine compartment)

Does the Port motor have a pulley with no belt on it? A few pics may help....

OK, tell us which belt it is. . .

I would guess that it is the power steering. My boat is the same way for some reason, it seems that there is a need for only 1 power steering mechanism and that is on the starboard engine. The port engine is just a slave to the starboard engine's steering system.

The correct setup is to have a power steering pump on each engine and have a 'priority valve' arrangement, but a lot (most) boat builders are cheap-asses and don't want to spend the extra $$$. If you have problems with the port engine, all is fine, you're running the power steering system from the starboard engine... But come the day the starboard engine can't be run, you're steering that sucker unassisted! You will not enjoy that, not one little bit!

My 1989 Sea Ray has twin 5.7s also - but only the starboard engine has the power steering pump - the two outdrives are connected via a bar that ties the two outdrives together - so - the starboard engine/outdrive is the controller. So as the fellows here have pointed out - yep - I bet you do not have a power steering pump on the port motor. As achris noted - it would be better to have two pumps...

Thanks to all replies. You are correct about the power steering pump. It is on Starboard engine only. Thanks much. Sam
