Missing clips

The high-speed adjustment knob on my Evinrude Twin Ski 40 (1971; Model 40153B; Serial J01292) has somehow fallen off, along with the linkage rod that connects it to the motor. The shaft on the knob has a groove around it that looks like it should take a clip to hold it in place. Likewise, the far end of the linkage has a similar groove. Both clips are gone. What would I ask for at the hardware store or elsewhere to get replacements? Otherwise, how might I make something to secure things together? I tried wrapping a fine wire around the shaft groove and twisting it tight, but it didn’t work very well.

LOL If I could find a buyer for every part of the motors that I've scrapped or sold cheap, I would be loaded by now! And every time I need a part like this, it is no longer available, so yes, do save all them old parts like F_R says.
