I am swapping out a new Long block on a Volvo 5.7 GXI . The new engine came with the harmonic balancer installed. But no bolt or washer. I went and looked at the old block, and it did not have on either. What gives? It is pressed on only about 3/4". Is this going to have to be a dealer part.? On other engines I replaced, I'm sure they were used. Thanks Dave-R

Ayuh,.... Is the hole in the crankshaft drilled, 'n tapped,..??

If so, you can buy the bolt at a GM Dealer,...

If Not, it ain't needed,.... I've seen 'em both ways,....

Thanks Bondo: Yes it's tapped, I went to the napa store and bought a 7/16 grade 8 bolt and washer. Maybe it didn't need it, but if it came off it would be a hell of a frizbee. Dave-R

Not sure if helpful, but depending on waterpump, there is also an aluminum "pilot" which adapts the center of the bore in the balancer to the hub on the lake waterpump, so they run on the same centerline. A single bolt holds this part to the crankshaft and is also used to retain the balancer from coming off the engine (highly unlikely due to heavy press fit...but no need to chance it)

Although there are 3 socket head bolts which attach the lake waterpump flange to the arms of the harmonic balancer, the machined pilot is what assures concentricity. So the bolt could be trapped under the lake waterpump...
