Missing Oil Seal?

Good morning,
I have just completed replacing my pickup pump in the lower unit of my Alpha One sterndrive. While cleaning the upper unit in preparation for reinstall a small seal just "fell out" of the bore where the drive shafts spline together. After some investigation, I THINK that I am missing a seal. If I understand the component assembly correctly, there should be a seal with a large outside diameter that seats in the housing which would seal the oil in the upper unit. Then, a smaller diameter seal that sits against the back of the upper seal that seals any water that may get into the lower unit. Am I understanding this correctly? Does this mean I have to pull the upper gear assembly to install the large diameter seal? I have tried to attache some pictures of the area I am talking about however, the upload quota won't allow me to. Any advice would be appreciated.

On the standard Alpha 1 the upper seal is oil control and the lower is to prevent water from entering the spline area, usually never works as designed. To replace the upper seal the upper needs disassembly, to replace the lower, just split the drive

Have a look at my video on servicing an Alpha One. I refer to that seal, and show how to replace it. Link at the bottom of my signature...
