missing prop

just bought a 78 starcaft 16' aluminum deep vee with a Merc 500 50 that was missing the prop. Any idea what a good staring point would when purchasing a new prop for this motor. from what Ive been told this engine should turn 5000-5500 RPm at WOT.

Go here. Enter your engine make, year, and HP. You will be given a range of prop pitches to choose from. Pick one in the middle of the range. It will get you in the ball park.
