I purchased a Jonson 70 Hp VRO that has no serial number. The seller claimed it was a 90's motor or possibly late 80's.
Can anyone tell me if there are distinguishing features that can help to identify a model year when the serial number is missing. Thanks for any help.Soddy

You should be able to check this out yourself. Go to this website: epc.brp.com. This is the original factory exploded parts diagrams for all their engines. Get into the Johnson outboards and go thru the 70 hp parts lists one at a time. Compare the parts on your engine with those from each year's engines. Keep in mind that things like the heads have part numbers on them that probably compare to the factory parts lists. You will find a lot of similarities between all of these 3 cylinders. A fairly standard engine. Differences are in the things like the ignition parts, carbs/linkages, choke systems and power trim systems. Later models had a trim switch on the lower cowling, in addition to the one on the control box handle. Somewhere around 1991, the blocks were reconfigured from 49 cubic inches to 56. This larger displacement made a huge torque improvement in these engines.

Thanks emdsapmgr and racerone. I will follow your suggestion on identification. I do have an 18 ft Crestliner with a 1986 70 Hp VOR Jonson. Is there a way to tell if it is the 59 cube block? The missing serial number motor was a bargain I could not refuse; may use it on another boat. $1000. Soddy

Easy for your to check: Check the part number cast into the head. The small bore engines up through 85 used head part number 323681. In 86 they changed to 56 cubic inches and the head changed part numbers to 394380.

The 56 cube engines only had one exhaust cover. ---They do not have a waterjacket cover on the cylinder head either.
