Hi everyone – been on here awhile but new to posting. Some GREAT info on these boards. First off I want to say sorry for the long post.

I have a 1998 Well craft scarab, 7.4 thunderbolt ignition with a bravo one drive on it. I took the boat in for maintenance on it a few weeks ago. The boat ended up having a few problems that needed to be fixed. The gimbal bearing, and coupler were both worn and needed replaced, needed a new fuel line and they had to replace a coil. They did the regular maintance on it, replacing the plugs, distributor cap and rotor assembly, thermostat, fuel filter, gear lube and engine oil etc. I picked the boat up from their dock and drove it home.

The next morning I went out, lowered the boat in the water and started it up. The boat started up fine and idled normally for 2 or 3 minutes, after a few minutes it started missing and nearly stalled out. I called the shop that worked on it and they sent their mechanic out to look at it. When he got there we started up the boat and ran it down the canal where I live. The boat ran fine. The timing was right on when he tested it. So that was that and he left. I ran the boat that afternoon and it seemed fine all around.

The next day my wife and I decided to go out on it for the day. It did the same thing ran horrible when first started but this time the engine was idling high so I adjusted the idle and let the boat warm up, again once it was warm everything was fine. We were out all day with no problem. I stopped by the shop and told them I believe the problem was only when the boat was cold. They said they would send their mechanic out on Friday afternoon (tomorrow). So basically my question is – does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? The timing is right on and it only runs bad when cold. Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I would like a little knowledge of what might be wrong, when the mechanic comes out tomorrow.

Thanks for any help

John

Re: Missing when cold.

I don't want to present myself as an expert here, but that sounds like a classic choke problem. Either opening too early or staying closed too long.

Sounds like a choke that is a little to tight keeping it choked for to long, or you could be getting carb ice if you are in a location that is around 40° and the air is moist.
Is this boat new to you? The carbed 7.4's are a bit of a cold natured engine, and need a little coaxing to keep running when cold...... and if it is carbed, you realize it isn't going to start and idle like a car with EFI, or even a boat with EFI.

Re: Missing when cold.

I live in South West FL, Cape Coral to be exact. So that rules out carb ice. Yes the boat is new to me, I bought it last July. Before I dropped the boat off for repairs, I never had a problem with it missing or a hard time keeping the engine running when cold. The mechanic is coming out tomorrow and I am sure he will isolate the problem, just wanted to have a little knowledge on what might be wrong before he does.

Thank you both for your input on this matter, it is much appreciated.

John

LAW, since this is a 1998 and you haven't posted the serial number of the engine.....is this boat carburated....or MPI ??

Sorry it is carbureted.

The mechanic came by a bit ago. We started the boat everything was fine, went down the canal everything ok. He looked at the carb and the choke was working properly, the timing was fine too. They must think I am nuts. It is going to rain here this afternoon, so I put the boat up. I plan on taking it out tomorrow. I'll post if it acts up again.

John

Re: Missing when cold.

Depending on the carb, maybe check the fast idle cam. I noticed on my carb, that it will keep the choke closed at a preadjusted setting when cold, and as it warms up that choke position wont allow enough air into the engine. It might take the throttle to be pumped a bit to release the fast idle cam to its next step for a less choked level. Once its warm and it clears all the steps, the choke valve is free to remain open.

Do you notice that it bogs and dies if you leave it at its idle after start and just wait without touching the throttle?

Re: Missing when cold.

That is what I was trying to say before. A carbed engine when cold will not just start at idle and stay at low idle and keep running like an fuel injected car will. It takes some tweeking of the throttle till it warms up.
