Mixing old and new gears in the lower unit

I have a 1977 evinrude 175 HP which needs forward, reverse gears and a clutch dog. The gears themselves are in good shape but are worn where the clutch dog makes contact. What is the thought on keeping the old pinon and replacing only the forward and reverse gears?<br /><br />Thanks in advance

The gears should be replaced as a set especially in a higher HP application like this. Considering how much labor is involved in shimming a gearcase the cost savings realized by not buying a new pinion will be minimal.
