I picked up a bunch of marine parts headed for the deep six and among the stuff was a decent little 2 cylinder Mercury motor that looks like it can be brought back to life. It's seized at present but before I start ripping into it I wanted to identify the model, year and hp. There is no cowling and no hp identification on the housing. The serial plate is intact with the the serial number 6404505. I've looked at all the Merc reference charts but they tend to cover a range of numbers and these could apply to many different models. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Model I.D. From Serial Number

Gerry, thanks. One question though ... when I look at a chart i.e. ( http://www.outboard-engine.com/mercurymodel7-9.php ) my numbers appear to fit the requirements for either a 7.5hp or a 9.8hp. How did you come to the conclusion it was a 9.8 and where did those numbers (1010523) come from. In any case, thanks again and have a great day!

1010523 is the model number assigned to that s/n by Mercury. When the s/n is entered into their search engine, it produces the engine model number and this model number defines the 9.8 as opposed to the 7.5 which for the same year, would be a model 1007523.
