Can someone let me know if the model/serial number is a long or short shaft? The person selling it stated 20" shaft, but obviously 20" transom is different wording. I have a 1972 Johnson 50hp and the mid exhaust section seems longer in a photo comparison and it's a 5hr drive.

Evinrude 1972 50hp.
Model# 50173 S
Serial# E1724.9

Well ---I think that 50173 is a 1971 model.------But post a picture ( mid section ) of this motor that is 5 hrs away.----Short shaft is easy to tell on these.

The photos were odd online. Made it look like a short shaft, but the seller stated 20". I drove and picked up the 50hp. It was painted camo, but is a 1971 Evinrude Lark 50hp long shaft. I appreciate the response. Same outboard as the 71-72 Johnson 50hp hydro-electric shifts. The control unit is only 10' instead of 14-15' of my boat, but it'll get a junction box. Now I have two full running hydro-electric 50hp. Shouldn't need more than maintenance items this season.
