I opened my storage hatch covers on my boat today for the first time in a long time. They were damp inside from the last rains we had here 2 or 3 weeks ago. My PFDs have mold growing on them. What is the best way to clean them? I have them draped over my wall right now to completely dry out.

hmmm.. if they are older or cheapos i would just throw them out and start fresh. If they are new or expensive i would try a bleach solution - something to kill anything that doesn't belong.

Wash them.......go to a laundromat and wash them in a commercial washer and you can even dry them. I would use oxyclean or a similar product.

You need to dry out your lockers too!

Wamart's Great Value Mold & Mildew Remover - $2.49. The active ingredient is Sodium Hypochlorite, which is exactly the same as the overpriced marine cleaners. Just did all my vinyl on the boat, then did some spots in the bathroom. Works a treat. Why pay more?

Re: Mold

Thanks for all the tips. I think I'll go with the Wal-Mart Great Value Mold & Mildew Remover and then take them to the laundromat to wash and dry them. Thanks again everyone.

Put some Dri Z Air in there. That will prevent the problem in the future.

I found a terrific product at Wal-Mart called LA's Totally Awesome all purpose cleaner. Diluted it 50/50 with water, sprayed it on and scrubbed with a plastic bristle scrub brush, then rinsed it off with a hose. The PFDs came out completely clean. I highly recommend this product for ANY cleaning needs. Cost $1.62!

Re: Mold

I will have to get some of that. Our older vests that stay in the lower compartment to meet the law are looking pretty dingy.
