Monark bass boat construction questions

Hey everyone - I ended up buying a used trailer for a boat that I'm restoring. The only problem is that the trailer came with a free boat on it.. ;) Well, my dad was looking for a project, so now he's got one. :)

The boat is a 1976ish 17 foot Mon Ark Trihull bass boat.

Is anyone familiar with this boat?

Of course the floor was soft so we cut a couple of holes in it to see what we're dealing with. The plywood under the fiberglass floor is rotten. Under the floor is filled with these yellow foam "pillows". I've heard of expanding foam inside of the hull but I wasn't expecting these foam pillow things..

The good news is that they are dry and it doesn't seem like they could hold water at all.

The holes weren't big enough to see down to the stringers. Should we assume they are wood and rotted? Does anyone know for sure what the stringers in this boat are made out of?

Thanks for any info you can provide!

You can just about bank on it that they are wood covered over in glass. You have a 50/50 chance that the stringers are rotted out.Only one way to see for sure, dig in!

Thanks Prockvoan. What about these foam "pillow" things that are under the floor? Anyone seen that before?

No, but if they are dry, just reuse them. The stringers may or may not be rotted. Just won't know 'till you get to tearin'...Good luck...

Thanks Jason - this boat was going to be my dads project ... after a few days of thinking about it, he decided he doesn't want to put the effort into it. Too bad - it would have been a good bass boat.

A buddy of mine hopefully will be picking it up in the next week or two ... it'll be his problem. :)
