...and you all teach math, correct?

OJ, let me guess, you believe this to be true because it is what you saw on the 6 o'clock news?

Being critical is one thing. Being an uninformed critic is another.

Check the facts. Students today have a much more vigorous academic work load compared to 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, or 90's. How many of you that graduated in the 70's or prior learned algebra in 7th grade? I can answer that for you...NONE.

Furthermore, today's students are growing up under much different circumstances compared to years past. Single parent homes, working to help pay the bills, both parents working, and the fact that college is almost an absolute if they want a decent wage after high school.

When I read some these, it leads me to believe that you complain about schools for one simple reason, only to complain. Simply put, some of you appear as though you are clueless. Trying to combine math with a social issue as you have is rediculous.

Who's complaining?

It was intended as a joke, not as an educational standard. It's supposed to sound ridiculous.

BTW: Algebra was easy.....It's trigonometry that was the hard lesson for me! ;)

Whoa, CJY...ratchet 'er back a notch or two....

I'm a retired Superintendent of Schools from Western New York, so I wouldn't jump off the truck to the extent you seem to describe.

While I agree with some of your comments, I think there is room for some levity.... Believe me, I've been there, done that, and all the humor that fits is a welcome relief to some situations in todays schools

Its my point of view... the fact that you dont get my satire about life and politics obligates me to think the same of you....

BTW Its because the public school where they attend ( out of our district) is the best in south florida that I continue to spend 21/2 hours driving the opposite direction from my work in Miami. I like the school,.. except when they told my son that there parents will vote against Jeb Bush if they care about them or their schools!

Sorry to bug you,.. but some us "know it all's" actually know what the FK we taking about, OVER... Umm, this kid that graduated in '79 had algebra in the 7th grade. :)

One thing that wasnt mentioned in the joke, or your rant CJY is the CARS system. I hope its only at my son's school. If there is a failing grade, the kid can 'Correct and Return Signed', for a 70.

Oh yeah, the joke is hilarious. :D

"It was intended as a joke, not as an educational standard. It's supposed to sound ridiculous"

Fireship, I understood it this way as well. However, how many people understood it to be rediculous and then agreed with the message to be in fact true? Read the posts. I was reacting to those.
My point to those, it is not true.

"While I agree with some of your comments, I think there is room for some levity.... Believe me, I've been there, done that, and all the humor that fits is a welcome relief to some situations in todays schools"

As one still in public education, I do not find the responses to be welcomed relief. To say what was said in the original post is one thing, to have people on board believing it is another. Again, believe it if you wish. I also have an opinion as well.

OJ, I agree, it is your point of view. I never told you not to have one. You are blowing up over mine.

Kind of funny how you all agree and post your opinion and laugh. I disagree, and you all come unglued.

From CJY - "How many of you that graduated in the 70's or prior learned algebra in 7th grade? I can answer that for you...NONE."

Wrong!!

There's a very good chance that I came through 7th grade before you were born and algebra was offered, though not mandatory.

Re: Monday Grin--Teaching Math

And while on the subject ... :)

Why Math is Taught in School

(Written By A Very Wise Man)

I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver cut right
in front of a pickup truck, causing him to have to drive on to the shoulder
to avoid hitting her.

This evidently angered the driver enough that he hung his arm out his window
and "flipped" the woman off.

"Man, that guy is stupid," I thought to myself.

I always smile nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does
anything to me in traffic, and here's why:

I drive 48 miles each way every day to work.

That's 96 miles each day.

Of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper.

Most of the bumper-to-bumper is on an 8 lane highway.

There are 7 cars every 40 feet for 32 miles.

That works out to be 982 cars every mile, or 31,424 cars.

Even though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper-to-bumper,

I figure I pass at least another 4000 cars.

That brings the number to something like 36,000 cars that I pass every day.

Statistically, females drive approximately half of these.

That's 18,000 women drivers, give or take!

In any given group of females, 1 in 28 has P. M. S .

That's 642.

According to Cosmopolitan, 70% describe their love life as
dissatisfying or unrewarding.

That's 449.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 22% of all females have
seriously considered suicide or homicide.

That's 98.

And 34% describe men as their biggest problem.

That's 33.

According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females carry weapons,
and this number is increasing.

That means that Every Single Day, I drive past at least one female that
has a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem, has seriously
considered suicide or homicide,
has P.M.S., ... and is armed.

Flip one off?

....... I think not.
