Re: montgomery ward
Well they made tons of them for one thing. Very simple and pretty tough considering how crude they were by today's standards. It has a wobbler type water pump and the impeller, properly called a "rotor" swells up from grease leaking out of the lower unit. New rotors are available, part number 550040. aomci.org clubmember Brian Wilcox has them. NEVER remove the side covers off the cylinders, you'll have a terrible time trying to reseal them if you do. The coils are probably good. The points are probably dirty and greasy. Take them apart and degrease & polish them up individually. But do them one at a time and keep track of all the little insulators. Points gap is .020, plugs .030. The carb is outrageously simple. The cork float is probably a mess. There is a Mercury float made of modern material that can be modified to work. It is part number 1395-8983, or Sierra (iboats) 18-7208. Fuel mix is 16:1, Lower unit takes grease, most people use Lubriplate #105, NAPA has it under their own part number. You will be amazed at how well that dumb thing runs!
