Anyone ever try to put rally wheels on there boat trailer? I have a 1974 chrysler trailer with 5x5.5/15 steel wheels and stock hupcaps. Number one problem is changing the bolt pattern (thinking just change drums), number 2 is offset and 3 are they strong enuff. Single axle, about 2800lbs loaded. Not worried about rust, live in Az.

Or if I stay with the stock wheels, do stock dodge wheels fit these old trailers (ramcharger and 4x4 trucks)? Or heaven forbid, ford wheels. Need to find at least one for a spare. Thanks for any input. Ed

Ahhh! Trailers usually use a ---God forbid---Ford pattern. No older Chrysler wheel will fit onless you buy an adapter plate and then the offset will be way off. What about the center hole? Is it the same size as the trailer hub?

Do NOT try to run with three lugs--first off, the wheel will not be true. If you can change drums or hubs for a Dodge front, that would be the best option. You may get a better response over in the trailer forum.

trailers are 5 x 4.5" pattern. AMC and Jeep has a 5 x 4.5" pattern as well as the later Eagle cars. Dodge also has 5 x 4.5"
both Jeep and Dodge center hole is 2.81" (71.5mm)

Ford is usually 4.25" pattern on later cars, and 4.5" on earlier cars. the earlier cars had a 2.77" (70.3mm) center hole

center holes and offset will be the critical things to check. Most trailer tires have a 3.19" center hole. however most trailer tires are lug-centric where many cars are hub-centric. you will have to measure.

Trailer wheels also have zero offset which centers the load directly on the centerline of the tire. You can use an offset rim but don't go nuts. Three inches is a bit much and would tend to load the bearings unevenly with possible early bearing failure. It also adds three inches to the effective spindle length which may result in bent spindles.

Re: Mopar Rally Wheels on trailer

Kind of put it in this section cause it's a mopar thing. The trailer does have 5x5.5 bolt pattern and I know Dodge used that pattern in the 1970's into the late 80's with 15" wheels on 4x4's and vans. And ford and cj jeeps used it forever, just don't know about the center hole (if it's big enuff). Guessing jeeps and 4x4's would have a large center hole.

I can find replacement drums with 5x4.5, so if they fit the axle, that's the way I'll go. Will have to measure the offset on the rally wheels I have. I can see the trailer wheels have no offset and with the current fenders, the rally's will have to match pretty close. Still working on the boat (74 Conqueror SIII), trailer comes next. Just trying to plan ahead. Thanks all for your input.

All the "B" body and "E" body mopars used 14" and 15" 5 x 4.5" wheels. PS: My Eagle tandem axle trailer uses the 14" x 5 x 4.5" lug pattern wheels also.

you may can check on some mopar forums as the mopar buffs could probally answer your questions but seems you got some good advice here.. i believe you could get a spare wheel/tire combo from a trailer supply store or here on iboats with your current set up.. 5x5.5 is a common size wheel for ford/dodge but the center hole is important also. i now the older ford trucks some were 5x4.5 (small ranger) as well as the yj model jeeps (early 90's) but the 5x5.5 were used on pre 1997 f-150's not sure about latter models. and i could be totally wrong about my info posted i am trying to remember off top of my head. so trust BUT verify my info. lol i wouldnt intentionally steer you wrong.

Another option is to modify the rims that you have. Not sure if they still do it, but Stockton Wheel was known for modifying Chrysler Rally Wheels. They could take your stock wheels and make them any size you wanted.

Re: Mopar Rally Wheels on trailer

the more I think about it, the less I want to do it. One big reason is having really nice wheels on a trailer you might leave at a boat ramp for a day or two, there's a good chance they won't be there when you get back. I think I'll try and find a spare wheel, most likely a ford truck wheel or 2, if they fit (since there's millions of them). Maybe some day I'll try and make it work. Thanks all for your input, Ed

Just buy a trailer wheel. They are very inexpensive.

I would never buy a used wheel. You have no idea of their history.
