A few days ago somebody stole the front license plate off my wife's new suv, including the bracket. I call the sheriff and did a stolen license report and obtained the case number to give to the Calif. Dept. of Motor vehicles, to get replacement plates. DMV opens at 8:00 AM here, so I got there at 7:00 AM ands was 10 th. in line. At 8:00 AM, when they opened the doors, there were aprox. 80 people in line behind me. (cool)<br /> I got to a clerk right away and presented the remaining plate and the application for the new plates and sticker. She looked at the paperwork and said where is your wife, the suv is registered to her. I told the clerk my wife is a college professor and has an 8:00 AM starting time for her classes. The clerk said the vehicle is registered to her and she is the only person who can get the replacement plates. I explained she would have to cancel her morning classes to get the plates and that can't be done. Her answer to that was not saying anything, but answered by raising her hands and shrugging shoulders.<br /> I was now getting upset with this "third world import" and let her know by reminding her that an illegal alien can get a drivers license with out any form of legiment identification, but I can't get a stolen license plate replaced for my wife of 32+ years. She replied, "that's correct." The people that were standing behind me said could not believe what they were hearing. <br /> This is another reason I want to leave the United States and go back home to Colorado.<br /><br /> ...Bob in Calif...

Sad but true Bob.I can understand the wife needs to be there rule,however as you point out,if an illegal can obtain a license without citizenship to the country that tends to undermind the entire rule process.Just curious,is Calipornia the Philipino pronounciation?

Bob,<br /><br />Same holds true in AZ. I could not get a plate for my sons car, even though he is a minor in my care. You know the DMV workers have a cheat sheet under their desk so that they can ask you for some piece of oibscure paperwork that no one has ever heard of. A one shot trip to the DMV is like winning the lottery.<br /><br />The only way around it was to put the title in both our names as a me and/or him type scenario.<br /><br />That's a little scary due to liability. I don't think they'll be suing him.

Bob, Bob, you forgot those six possibly magic words when dealing with the California DMV:<br /><br />"Let me speak with your supervisor"<br /><br />DMV counter people are rarely empowered to make decisions and will never attempt to do so, if they want to keep their jobs.<br /><br />Supervisors usually have some leeway to make judgment calls and will do so just to show they can, if nothing more.<br /><br />It had worked several times for us when dealing with the CA DMV.<br /><br />Marty

Bob, you should have told her that you were your wife. That would make you a transgendered trans trans something, most likely a protected "class" of person in CA. "Here's your plates errr m'am," and they probably would have invited you to lunch as well.

Just a question here, no offense intended. BUT...If she's your wife of 32+ years why would you have a vehicle registered in just her name? I feel pretty certain that the SUV didn't come with her when ya married her and wasn't 32+ years old. All 3 of my vehicles are registered in mine and my wife's name. Just wondering.

That's why you get a power of attorney before you go to the BMV.

My wife paid for her suv herself and wanted it just in her name. When I bought my new van conversion last year, I put it in just my name. She has 3 cars, with only the suv in her name. I have six cars and trucks, three of which are in my name alone. Both of my boats are solely in my name also. I own two homes, one is co-owned with my wife and the other is my sole and separate property. This is where a living trust is nice. You can disperse you holdings upon your demise thru the trust and get one heck of a tax break for your heirs, and the breaks are getting better by the year!!! I agree with Samagee.My wife and I had power of attorneys drawn up ..The DMV has these forms which available by the asking..that way one person can do it all...
