All grass carp must be released unharmed.

All northern pike shall immediately be killed by removing the head, and retained, refrigerated or frozen, reported to Dept of fish and game, which will come and pick up the fish.

All whitebass must be beheaded, except on one lake where you can either behead OR release them.??

Skinnywater, I kindof figured the northern and whitebass were invasive species, but to have to behead them and then keep them refrigerated till retrieved by a warden? What a hassle. I wonder how many people follow thru on that. Sounds expensive, too.

And why give the option of releasing the whitebass in one lake?

And I don't want to know how you sterilize a carp.

Yep, illegal alien fish are on the top of the socialist, Liberal adjenda here in Calipornia. The Fish and Game Dept. poisoned an entire lake, killing bass, native trout, catfish, etc., just to get rid of some "ilegal alien" fish. I'm suprised the A.C.L.U (American Communist Liberals Union) didn't file suit to have the native fish removed and let the "illegals" stay. They sue on behalf of the millions of illegal alien people here so they they can sponge off of us poor suckers who are taxed on just about everything we buy, including the daly newspaper!!! (no joke)
I'm about ready to leave the United States and go back home to Colorado.
...Bob in Calif... "Home of the sleaziest politicians money can buy"

Re: More evidence of a wacky California

The Northerns were found in one lake, Lake Davis.
They appeared suddenly a couple of years ago. They have been desperately trying to keep them from spreading into the Feather River. The Feather is a world class fishery with astounding numbers of King Salmon and Steelhead. The Feather River is an isolated instance of a very successful managed fishery. They are in the process of applying the same things that they've done in the Feather to my fishing hole, The Sacramento River. All indications are that The Sacramento will in a few years be on par with the major Pacific Northwest Salmon/Steelhead fisheries.
The Feather River runs into the Sacramento, the American River runs into the Sacramento. In Fact, all major watersheds will be infected with Northern Pike if they don't get a grip on it.
The purpose of showing proof of a dead Pike is for indication purposes. Are they spreading, where and how? They've been unsuccessful in killing them all, yet the've been successful in stopping the spread, so far.
In my opinion, the fingerling Salmon and Steelhead are to valuable to be food for the Pike.

As a side note, last year millions were spent modifying Shasta Dam to bring cold water from the bottom of Lake Shasta into the Sacramento River.
Years prior temps in the Sac. would range 60-67F deg. this time of year. I've not seen it rise above 57Fdeg. this year. This and with the completion of modifiying of all irrigation wiers, pumps and canals, the Salmon are loving it!
Last year was a record run on the Sac. This year is down, however, in as little as 3-5 years, wall to wall Salmon/ Steelhead!!

Now only if we could apply some of these rules to illegal aliens in our country?

Naaa....That would make too much sense...

H.

I can't remember where I read it, but they are introducing grass carp in a couple different places to control overgrowth of plants. I had not heard of them being sterile, but that would make sense.

Personally I think it makes more sense than allowing a non-native invasive species ruin a native fishery. I love flathead catfish but I hate what they have done to some local rivers. I bet northerns would do the same and don't get me started on how white bass unchecked by predation can ruin the forage base of a lake.

I havne't fished for Northern's for a while, but they are an aggresive fish at the top of the food chain. Big Pikes have been known to go after ducks. Introduce them where there are trout or salmon and kiss the native species goodbye. Where I am know, we have problems with illegally introduced Bass competing for food with the native trout. The guys who run these bucket brigades are the one's who should have their heads cut off (and stored in a freezer to be shown to the DFO).
