okay
the specifics of my 89 merc 80 horse oil injected: the serial number is OB310239
i borrowed a infrared gun today and hooked it up to the ears. let it run for a bit but the motor would not get hot enough. the pee water was still cold when i shut it off and the reading from atop the first vertical plug was like 80 degrees. i know i need to run it to get it up to temp. the thing is, as soon as i started the motor the horn came on and it never went off until i shut the motor down. so that tells me that maybe the motor itself isnt overheating but that their is something wrong with the horn
when we went to the lake saturday, this is what happened. we put the boat in, started the motor and the horn stayed on for several minutes as we went up the lake. it shut off and didnt come on again until late in the day when i was bringing my friend back to the dock. i dropped him off and ran back up the lake and the horn didnt stop until i reached the fishing spot. when i ran back down the lake a while later, the horn never came on.
i was told when i bought the boat from the seller that the horn comes on until the thermostat reaches 144, but it doesnt mention this anywhere in the owners manual.
i am going to use the gun on the motor this weekend after i run it up the lake but i was wondering if it could be a sensor. the seller replaced the thermostat and impeller(pump) just before i bought it cause he said the motor quit peeing suddenly and when he replaced the impeller(pump) the original was fine but he tested the old stat and he said it didnt open so he figured that was the reason the peeing quit. anyways the motor is peeing fine now and runs great and i just wanted to get some advice from you all. is there a diagram somewhere where i can see where the sensor is or should i just use the gun to see if it is actually over heating? what would a normal temp read and where should i take it? under the flywheel, or the big vertically rectangular unit where the plugs go in?
sorry for the rant and thanks again for your help.
