Have 85 Mariner 30 & want to get more horses without going to more weight of a bigger motor.
Any resources on how to beef up? Thanks, Bill

Buy a bigger motor. Outboards are not like car engines.

Bog,Have you checked around its been 17 years since your motor was built. There can be a big weight difference engine to engine Also Its generally not cost effective to try to upgrade horsepower.
Your better off selling or trading in. Get yourself The latest stuff and more hp at the same time. Happy hunting.

Not only that (What Steel said), but newer engines of the same HP rating or more could be less weight than the motor you have now.

Craig

I have the same engine, only 1 year newer. These are great engines, very tough, mine was overheated 2 years ago and seized up, after cooling down it started back up and hasnt missed a beat.

Weight is around 120lbs for this engine. I have a set of doel fins on mine, not sure how you can add horsepower- I think the 20/25/30/40 are all the same block- not sure how to gain the extra 10 hp.

By the way- this is a yamaha engine with mariner decals on it- u can see yamaha symbols all over the power head and such if you look well enough.

That said- yamahas of the same vintage can swap parts.
-John
