I'm haveing basically the same problems with my 1974 65hp Johnson. Starts fine, idles fine, but when you acclerate it dies. After repeated choking (while idling) it'll finally take off & run fine until shut off, then back to the choking process. Have changed gas hose & primer bulb, plugs, and ran fuel additive & carb cleaner. Is it time for a real mechanic to work on it?

I'm not an expert by any means, but I have a 50hp that had similar problems. runs much better now that I have pulled the carbs and cleaned them.

Thanks for the reply. I'm somewhat limited in tools & workspace & leary of trying to pull the carbs myself. Read somewhere that carb & choke cleaner is definitly a no-no. Do you agree?

Hello<br /> carb and choke cleaner is a yes yes. just dont run it through the carbs while they are on and the engine running. sounds like its time to remove and clean the carbs. if you are scared to then find a competent tech. ask around the boat ramp or some marinas. there are way more incompetent than competent techs about good luck and keep posting
