Jeff clark, the fellow who started the Mavericks's surfing trend, started surfing in the early 70's, on a surf board that I gave him back then.

I worked with Jeff's father, for several years, in the late 60's and early 70's, when he asked if I had a spare surfboard that I could give to his son, who wanted to learn the sport. His dad knew I had been surfing for many years and thought I might have a spare, which I did. Jeff's dad and I were working in the same correctional center at that time.

Here is this morning's information on the tournament, from my local newspaper.

www.insidebayarea.com/sanmateocountytimes/localnews/ci_3486915

...Bob in Calif...

That article says there were 50,000 people there. I don’t think so, but definitely more people than I have ever seen in HMB. There was a 90-min wait at the Half Moon Bay brewery, unheard of! Dang event is now sponsored by Verizon and a host of other companies. 4 whirly birds in the air. Used to be a neat little competition. All in all, probably better that it’s a big deal now.

Bob – if you went yesterday, I was the guy standing next to Jeff when the Mermen were playing. It’s not like I know Jeff, didn’t know it was him until the MC came up and started talking to him about the day’s event. Fwiw, he said it was the best Mavericks ever; the conditions were perfect. I’ll get the video/DVD when it comes out.
