Ok, so I just bought my 04 Hurricane on a tandem axle trailer. The torsion bars and brakes are extremely rusted, and need to be replaced. After talking with people, it seems that very few saltwater boat have functioning brakes. TX law requires brakes on anything over 4500#. My boat will be right at that weight, when fully loaded. I'd like to listen to the advice given already, but my gut says its the wrong decision. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Is that an aluminum trailer? I would replace the axles with non torsion axles and replace the brakes with Kodiacs.

So what was your previous advice?

I was told not to replace the brakes because they will just rust out again. I don't plan on leaving the old rusty brakes in place, so I would have no brakes at all. Both guys said they were not important.

Well,, Bring your tow over ,,let me cut your brake lines and see you drive in Austin traffic without brakes !!
Get brakes repaired or replaced because it is like you have 2 ton in the back of your truck and not tied down..
Panic stop one time and you will be a firm believer in trailer brakes .. BTDT !!!!!!!!

Well as long as Both guy said it!

Seriously, I would replace the brakes.

Point taken! And thats why I brought it to the forum, for more opinions than I had. Before this the most I'd ever towed was 1500#, so this is new territory for me. Thanks for lining me out. Brake life has to be better than 2 years when PMed properly, right?

Re: more opinions

do me a favor and go back to who ever told you the brakes were not important and kick them in the junk, and then do it again for me and then again for a few of the others here.

Get the brakes replaced and look into some kind of fresh water shower would be my advice or maybe add a good cleaning to the brakes when you get home maybe.

I can't believe that anyone would tell you that you don't need brakes

I rinse the heck out of my disc brakes and they don't look like that after many years.
