More outdrive lift woes/questions

I took the boat out Saturday (at least I tried to). I started the motor and tried to back away from the dock and discovered the outdrive was still in the up position. I tried to lower it and it wouldn't go down so back on the trailer it went. I had this problem once before and I found that if I had someone lean on the outdrive while trying to lower it, the outdrive would go up and down on it's own. That is, except this time. While trying to lower it the pump quit. It was running pretty slow and then just stopped. Does this sound like a relay or motor? I can still hear a click when I move the switch. This is on a Pre-Alpha (1975 vintage) outdrive.

Howdy,

I found that if I had someone lean on the outdrive while trying to lower it, the outdrive would go up and down on it's own.
Well, it really isn't going up and down on it's own if someone has to "lean" on it is it?!

That's a pretty old drive and trim system. If you have severe corrosion in the trim cyls, they'll stick (and leak:eek:)........... Also, if the trim pump is worn out, it won't produce sufficient pressure to do the job.

I don't remember which system you have (tilt only or tilt and trim) but if the pump runs, you should probably pull your trim cyls and ensure that they operate freely.

Then inspect the pump to see if the internal pump parts are severely worn or the check valves are sticking open etc.....

It's just a VERY simple hydraulic pump powered by a reversible DC motor.

I think you can buy some internal parts for the pump but if you check ebay and elsewhere, you can actually buy trim pumps for around $250.

you can try jumping the solenoids with a wire

or just hotwire the motor to test it

Since this is old technology, is it realistic/possible to convert to a newer style pump like alpha or bravo and how tough would the swap be?
