Hi, I have read a ton of threads but this is my first post. Here are my questions with a little background first. I’m always browsing boat manufacture web sites (especially this time of year) to see what they are offering the boating public. A lot of manufactures are starting to post information about their 2004 models. I noticed that for 2004, Bayliner dropped the price of their 185 Bowrider by more than $3000 dollars and increased the freight from $682 to $1036(Yikes!). I checked a few other models (180 and 212) and saw increases in price anywhere from roughly $400 to $1200 dollars. The 175 Bowrider stayed at $9995.

This got me think’n…..

When the 175 were made in the US (the last year was 2002), it cost over $13000. When production of the 175 was moved to Mexico in 2003 the price dropped to $9995. Over $3000 price reduction with a $907 freight charge!

Did Bayliner move production of the 185 to Mexico like they did with the 175? (I have not read anything about such a move.) Has anyone heard of any problems with the 175 models being made overseas? Within our boating community, I know Bayliner does not have the reputation for producing a “top quality” product but it would be interesting to see if there is an unusually large amount of complaints with the 2003 175?

If Brunswick Corporation is shifting boat construction to countries where labor is cheaper, will other boat builders follow? Maybe Genmar?

Hmmm….. Just think’n…..

I guess nobody is interested in this topic. If you hear something in the future, be sure to let us know.

Mark

Re: More Overseas Boat Building???

I was at the Atlantic City (NJ) In-Water Boat Show today and had an opportunity to ask the Bayliner representative for the local region about production of the 185 moving to Mexico. It looks like I was partly correct. Some of the production of the 185 has moved to Mexico. Production of the 185 is also done in the US (Maryland, I think.). The rep said that most of the Mexico units go to the Midwest and West Coast with the majority of US manufactured units going to the East Coast. The impression I got was that the manufacturing facilities in Mexico are maxed out, that's why partial production of the 185 is done in the US.

I'm sure we will see more and more Bayliner production moving to Mexico as capacity increases.
