While I was doing a compression check this morning I noticed a problem. I warmed the engine up using the proper hose attachment. I noticed water spewing out of the back starboard screw that holds the lower unit off. I turned off the engine and then the hose. Water continued to stream out of the screw or around it for a minute or two.

Break it to me gently. What problem do I need to deal with? I changed the lower unit oil a month ago. No particles & no water then. Also understand that this motor sat for several years before I've been using it the past 4 months. Could it be that the lower unit gasket has developed a leak? Or could it be a problem with the water pump? It has not been replaced, as the mechanic that cleaned the carbs and got her running said she was working fine. Please let me know.

Shane

Hi Shane

There are several drain holes in leg.to make sure the leg empties after each run. When you run on muffs, in pressure, the motor gets plenty of water. It can cause som to run from drain holes, i. exa. if pump leaks a bit out into leg. I am sure it would be a good idea to change impeller, specilly if motor has sat for a while.

I have a Force 50hp, which I believe is of the same lineage. On mine, there is a hole right next to the front(facing the boat) starboard LU bolt. This hole drains the upper leg section and is absolutley normal to have water coming out..

I'm not sure if this describes your situation, but this may be normal..

Thanks guys. I'll have to take another look at it.

Rogerwa, mine is leaking on the starboard side, bolt closest to the transom. Is this the same spot?

Thanks,
Shane
