Sorry for being a pain. I have a 1977 evenrude 175 - model 175740. Hydraulic assist shift. The lower unit first started to click going into reverse. We checked the fluid and it was a little low, so filled it up to the proper level. Next time out, we had no reverse at all and forward was poping out of gear. We tore into the lower unit and discovered the clutch dog was severely worn on the forward side not real nice on the reverse side (but not as bad as the forward side). Forward gear looks pretty good, reverse gear is not as good. I was going to replace forward, reverse, pinon, clutch dog, but holy cow - parts alone are nearly $800 - my cost. A few questions: 1) Should I try to just put a clutch dog in it? - has anyone had any success / failures in doing this? 2) If I do end up doing all the gears, where can I get the special tool to measure the pinon depth? - How difficult is this and 3) Are there any tips I should know about that the manual doesn't give?

Thanks in advance
