Just bought a Russian 70 year old Mosin 7.62x54 and finally got a chance to go to the range today and try it out. Man, what a blast, this thing is sweet and fun to shoot. This is my first experience with any kind of military surplus weapon so I had my doubts about it being a useful rifle or just a wall hanger. I am well pleased. Anyone have any experience with these (M91/30)?

They are great rifles. Cheap to shoot too. Every single one is different however. Mine has a stiff trigger, even with a Finnish sear in it. My buddies out of the same crate is super light.

they throw nice fireballs once shortened up too!

Really nice rifle for the price. I think I got one for $70 a few (maybe more) years ago.
It is fun to shoot - like a cannon.

I've not shot that rifle. How's the recoil? The 7.62 rounds can be a bit harsh on the shoulder (at least the one's I've fired).

It kicks pretty good. being a 7.62x51r there is a lot of powder behind it. When i shortened mine it kicked a lot more.

I braced for the 1st shot but it was not too bad, maybe the same or a little less than a 12 guage. It is LOUD and shoots a fireball. I shot at a 7" to 8" pine tree for the heck of it and the FMJ bullet went clean through it! Strange thing is it shoots a little to the left w/o the bayonet but with the bayonet attached it is dead on. Looks a little intimidating with the bayonet attached because it is 5-1/2 feet long!

I like a little "forward" weight on a rifle when I shoot. My best "distance" gun has a varmint barrel on it. Maybe it's the added weight out on the muzzle that is making the difference.

My kid would say shooting with the bayonet makes the gun "cooler" anyway.

They were all sighted in with the bayonets attached from the factory.

I've got the M44 carbine w/ folding bayonet and 91/30 with detachable bayonet, got both at Big 5 for between $80 and $119, , huge kick, great accuracy and so simple, ammo not too spendy either, accurate as heck!

My son in law bought one about a month ago. He was able to get one with matching serial numbers. Came with the cleaning kit, oil can, sling, and bayonet. To me, it kicks about like my Remington 30.06, except the Mosin has a steel butt pad. Really inexpensive to acquire and shoot. Was surprised how large a following it has.

I got my at Dunhams with all matching serial numbers. I found out later that this is not really true because these guns (according to the salesman) are arsenal refurbished to like new working condition. They can be made up from a mix of parts but the arsenal re-stamped them to match the others. There are some good websites that explain how you can spot this. As far as functionality it does not mean a thing. All my numbers match but the trigger guard is made by Tula and the rest of the rifle is made by Ivensk. Be sure to tell your son to check the firing pin length,it can be a safety issue if too long. Also plan on spending a couple of hours cleaning off all that cosmoline.

LOL - ya, he spend many hours cleaning off the cosmoline. I think they dip in it that stuff. He had to completely take it apart to get all of it, and some started seeping out after shooting it.

I love mine - been used for hunting for years. Shortened the barrel a bit, added a sport stock as well as a scope mount on top of the receiver.

I have an M44 shooter, a Finn M39, a 91/30 sniper arsenal refurb, an M91, and probably one or two I am forgetting. I love them all. The M44 is a blast at my indoor range and scares the hell out of everyone around me :)

Re: Mosin Nagant rifle

I'm probably picking up a 91/30 later this week. Hex if I can find one. Going to offload a Ruger American 30-06. I'll loose out a little money on the Ruger but I don't like the Ruger and it's worth it to me

You should not have trouble finding one. My local Dunhams has over 40 in stock. I have seen them available online for $129.95 plus $25 handling at your local gun shop. Post back after you try it out. Of all the guns I have ever shot this one is a BLAST (literally) to shoot.
