I am so glad I found this place!
What a huge amount of info is here, and such friendly folks.

I bought my first boat a 10 days ago, and have been working diligently on it.

It is a 1972 16' Mirrocraft aluminum V-hull, with a 1954 Evinrude Bigtwin 25 hp motor.
Motor has been rebuilt completely a year ago, and just had carbs rebuilt and impeller replaced a month back.

It has been somewhat of a grade B horror movie to clean up though, and I will tell you it's tale of woe.
The last owner was a degenerate slob.
He had gone catfish baiting with horse food pellets, huge cubes of compressed whatever-it-is that horses eat.
Well, the bag broke in the bottom of the boat, and rather than cleaning it out, he just let it sit. The boat was, of course, uncovered, and got rained in, making a nice delicious wet mass for the flies to find.
The flies took advantage of the wonderful food source, and laid many many eggs, hatching into about 5 pounds of maggots.
He swore he would clean it out before we bought it, but he merely took it to the car wash and attempted to rinse it a bit. He delivered it at night, (what a surprise).
Well, the creepy crawlies had retreated under the badly dry rotted and disintegrating carpet, and when we pulled that out, it looked like a scene from the Exorcist.
Many washings later, and after removal of the cruddy carpet, we were sans critters, but then were faced with the remnants of the old carpet glue and backing glued to everything.
I found that straight lacquer thinner and 3 days of scraping and brushing removed the glue, and we were down to a nice shiny boat again.
We painted the inside of the boat and the wood a clean white, and added the special grit sand to the paint for traction.
It is still about a week from completion, and I am sure more questions will arise after launch.

We have moved from Denver, CO to Marshall, East TX last summer to buy a giant old mansion and run it as a B&B, and part of the wonders down here are the fabulous lakes.
Caddo Lake looks prehistoric, with gorgeous cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, and alligators to boot!
I don't know much about fishing yet, but plan on mostly sight seeing with the new boat at first, and trying not to get lost.
I moved from Baltimore MD to CO about 40 years ago, at age 10, and have always had a "thing" for water and boats. I will finally get to indulge that yearning again, and am very excited.
I am naming the boat "Molly Brown", as in "The Unsinkable", as she was from a small town in CO that I lived in for 7 years, Leadville.
I hope it brings the little boat some luck!
Nice to meet y'all :)

That is pretty disgusting. I had to extricate the rotting corpse of a mountain lion out from under a house once, had to remove 100+ rotting dead mice from a wall once, and we won't even get into the dead skunk under house issue, but thankfully none has been boat involved, thank God. I would probably give up the hobby....

Geeez!
A mountain lion corpse!
Well, that must have taken a bit more than a garden hose to clean out!
I am sure the mice were no picnic either.
The exorcism and purification on my little boat is complete now, and I imagine the local birds feasted on the washout for a few days.
Thanks for the welcome, djohns, and the "it could have been worse" tale, Jason. :)

Re: Most disgusting boat ever

after leaving the care of my big boat in the less than capable hands of my little brother, I can tell you that it can get worse ... there is a garden growing in the back of the boat, and up in the cabin, and I am just waiting til the ground dries up a bit so I can get up in her and blast things out with a hose and a shovel - this boat was damn near Concours, I wasted an entire summer making her gleam like a jewel

but hey, aint it rewarding to see all the little creepy crawlers expunged from the premises? :)

Re: Most disgusting boat ever

Thanks Neumanns and Castaway Ray.
I suppose I should have taken pics of the boat as "before" shots, but it was just too awful to immortalize, lol.
My sympathies on the garden boat, Ray.
We bought our boat from a pastor student at a local Baptist university, so I attribute the demon infestation directly to him, hehehe.
Guess he never heard of the "cleanliness is next to Godliness" thing.
And Neumanns, Leadville was lovely... in the 2 months that passed for Spring/Summer there.
There were really only 3 seasons there, June July, and Winter. 10 months of winter, and 2 months of Poor Sledding.
The year we moved out, 1980, there was 35 FEET of snowfall that season.
Here in E. TX, that seasonal thing seems reversed, 2 months of cool weather, and 10 months of searing warmth. :)

35 FEET of snow ... talk about getting plowed!!!

LOL, ten months of winter and two months of bad sledding, zero months of thawed lake to go boating in, yucko, I would look for some thermal springs to go boating in the snow

then again, I am insane

"but it just might be a luuuuuuunatic youre lookin for"

of course, here in the Great NorthEast, it has been months of snow followed by months of rain, I forget what that big hot thing looks like ... yanno, the big yellow hot thing that kids put a smile on when they draw it ...

The searing "warmth" will soon pass and then it will become just plain hot. I spent 16 yrs in the rio grande valley and gotta say these minnesota winters are not near as bad as I remembered. Isnt leadville one of the highest non seasonal town in colorado, also them one hundred year old + cabins are really neat.

Re: Most disgusting boat ever

Whaler_Proud, our website for the B&B is on my profile here as my home page, we have been open since last Fall, and would love to have you come stay.
Our boat should be ready to go in another week or so, we have the inside all painted and have to remount boxes for the electrics and the gas tank, and should be ready.
I would love to have a more experienced boater along, really! Please call us on the 800 # or Email. :)
And Neumanns, yes Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the USA, at 10,000+ feet altitude.
It was home to the rare fur-bearing trout, pink-eyed snow snakes, and a few other unidentifiable mountain beasties.
Even a Bigfoot or two had been reported.
But most of the animals were smarter than the people, and moved downhill for the Winter. ;)

Re: Most disgusting boat ever

Hey Lighting I feel your pain. Im on my second prodject boat. I came accross this boat while i was delivering mail one day. I decided to buy it without my wife knowing about it. (what a mistake).. Well the boat looked like an oak tree. It took me about 10 hours to get all the moss off the hull and deck.. had soft spots in the floor. so i decide to make it a full restore and pulled off the gunnel and cabin shell and floors. Got to the stringers and every one was gone thanks to termites. Yes Termites.. there must of been a million termites in the boat. so I had to treat the boat and my shop and my house.
Its been a month now and all the termites are gone and all the stringers are out and the new ones are all cut and ready to be installed. Just need to have a day off when it's not raining.... So i feel your pain...

Termites huh? Scarey thought. My Brother -In Law has several ant nests in his boat we have been killing them for 2 weeks. (at least I hope they're ants!).
