Motor begins running rough

My fishing partner has a 1995 Johnson Fast Trak outboard that starts and runs fine. However, after running a long distance, the motor will chug down and begin to run like a race car that is hitting the rev limiter. If we shut it down and let it cool off, it will run fine until it does it again. I expected an overheating problem and changed the water pump. That did not fix the problem. I could use some help if any of you fellow Johnson owners have experienced this problem.

Sounds like its going into SLOW mode, check the t-stat on port head to see if stuck open or sender wire on starboard head is routed close to plug as it can trip SLOW.

Thanks, Fatzbullet, but I am not familiar with SLOW mode so you may have to explain that one to me. Also, we removed the thermostats a while back because of the problem. So, I am still puzzled by this problem.

Your over heat horn may not be working and it is going into SLOW which limits the the rpm when you have an overheat. The horn should blow at the same time.
