We have a 1974 40hp Mercury motor that runs great when cold and then will bog down and cut out after about 20 minutes. The water& fuel pump was rebuilt and ball and fuel lines replaced without results. Any ideas? That sucker has left me sitting one too many times! :) Paulette

could it be over heating?

It doesn't seem to be..now that the water pump has been replaced. It was overheating last season..so much so that the throttle cable would acually seize up..once it cooled down..it would shift again. This season we replaced the pump and as I said..runs great for about 20 minutes. The water stream is cool to touch. Could the overheating of last season have damaged the cylinders?

Check your compression first, before you go any further, to be sure you have'nt done any permanant damage.
