I own a 1980 Mercury 50 hp outboard motor and I am very frustrated and do not want to pay $200 to get it fixed when I know it is something I can fix. What is happening is when I go full speed for 3-5 minutes it works fine and then all the sudden it will bogg down and go back to idle speed but won't kill it will just go slow. After I shut it off and start it again it will do the same thing. When I pump the ball it wont accelerate it will just bogg more down. Someone please help.

Re: Motor boggs down to idle speed

Im working on the very same problem, excpet mine is the plugs fouling out, im about to try a new tank o gas.. my other boat guy told me to put it in water and run it, wait for it to bogg down and push the choke in, if it starts to speed up, it may be in the carbs, so I dont know whats gunna happen tell you in about 3 hours.

Re: Motor boggs down to idle speed

i had a simalar problem today and what i found was that my portable gas tanks feed tube(inside the tank) was too long and was losing vacume by being stuck to the bottom of the tank. i just pulled it out and cut it a little shorter and on somewhat of an angle to prevent it. hope it helps

yeah I disposed of all that old gas and mixed new fuel and NEW oil. Cleaned my plugs with gun scrubber and a wire brush, badda bing, it was had to start im sure thats my double oil, but it ran great.. Anyone use that canister type water seperator? I have one that is a mecury part. Is there anyway for water to get by that sucker? How often should it be changed as it is a fuel filter also?

Thanks!

try a search here under "fuel starvation".
try pumping the bulb when this happens and if
that fixes problem check fuel pump diaphram
for holes. carb/pump rbld. kits are not that
expensive. you can check the library for a manual
and perhaps do the work yourself.
good luck,
M.Y.
