Motor cover seal replacement question

Replacing the rubber seal (1979 Johnson 85 hp.). As you may well know the original one was attached with staples. I don't have the tool that would install those heavy staples. What is a better way maybe gluing it? I don't know what kind of tool the original was installed with. Any ideal would be appreciated.

Did you ever find out how to do that? I am having to do the same on my 79' Johnson. I know this is an old thread. but I like to know as well.

If I remember correctly I just pressed it in and it and it stayed in place. Would probably be a good idea to use some kind of weather stripping adhesive or silicon to make it stay on better. As long as the cover is on it will not fall off.
I sold the motor since.

Scotchlock 847 is the suggested glue. It is also used for other purposes such as sealing gearcases and crankcases. Available from Evinrude dealers in 5 oz tube
