What is the best way to remove the motor cover on a 1957 evinrude 7.5? I removed it once before when i had to remove the power head but i am wanting to give it a new paint job and do not want to scratch it when i am putting it back on... it seems like the shift lever is in the way and i cannot figure out how to remove it and putting it in neutral forward or revers dosent make a difference at all

Not sure if the shift lever is spring-loaded on the 7.5 - it is on my 5.5hp omc gale. You just pry it up slightly with a screwdriver and flip it so it's pointing down. Then the cover is easy to remove. If not spring-loaded, put the lever in reverse, wrap a towel or rag around it to prevent scratching and try removing the cowl.

I normally have better luck when the shift lever is in reverse. You may need to take the choke knob and/or the slow speed needle valve off. If that doesn't help, try taking the spark plugs off. I normally find that it comes off easier than it goes back on. lol I've never had too much trouble with getting it off. But check that choke knob. That may be what's holding it on. You should be able to take the choke knob off with just a flat head screw driver.
