My 40 merc runs perfect, except I noticed that the water almost bounces off of the transom at full throtle. Shouldn't I have more of a rooster tail effect? Should motor be higher or lower in water?

Re: motor depth

Hey,
Take a tape measure and measure from where your motor mounts to teh bottom of you boat. The cavatation plates should be below the bottom of your boat

Re: motor depth

The general rule of thumb is to have the cav. plate even with or up a little [3/4" or so] from the lowest part of the keel.

Sounds like you could go up to the next set of holes and see how that does. You want to be sure you can handle chop and sharp turns without the prop braking lose. It it does you need to go back down a set of holes.

BTW. You don't want a rooster tail.

Good luck...
