Motor Dies when I Accelerate

I have a 1995 Johnson 112 SPL. I was out on the lake the other day. Everything was normal and as I was leaving a fishing spot and getting up on plane my motor bogged down. I originally suspected that the problem was my that my gas gauge was a liar (1/4)showing or due to the choppy conditions the gas was sloshing around and was starving the engine. I was able to troll back to the ramp and occaisionally idle. Well low gas is not the problem. The engine idles normally or what I'm used to (I've always had a problem with the engine quiting after a few minutes of idling) and I can rev the engine out of gear w/o any problems. Again, when I accelerate and start to get on plane the engine bogs down. My fuel line and bulb are only a few months old. Could this be defective? Any suggestions on what the problem could be.

Thanks,

John C

Most likely it is the carb! Check the high and low speed jets and idle placement! Also it would not hurt to clean it out!

Sloopy's probability is good. To prove it, when you accelerate, push the ignition key in, activating the primer. If the engine picks up RPM, there's a blockage in one of the main jets. It'd be best to get that resolved before melting a piston.

Thanks for the replies. Is this something that I could do with a repair manual or should I let the PRO take care of it?

John

What if you (or the crew) pump the primer bulb? If it picks up, check your fuel pump. The diaphram might be shot. A little early on a 1995 model, but it can happen. Running out of fuel at wot...
Also check all fuel line connectors for an air leak.

Check for water in the gas line too. I had a similar problem with my old 90 Yamaha. It would run at lower speeds, but would bog down at Full Throttle.....all because of some pesky water.

You can check and clean the carbs yourself without much difficulty. I'd get a manual first to ensure you put everything back as it should be.

Took apart my carbs last spring for the first time without any problems.

Good luck!

Obviously it is not getting enough fuel. Likely one of three things is happening: 1 fuel pump is dying, 2 You still have a defective fuel line,(been there done that), 3 the needle valve in the bowl is not opening properly.

Check and clean all the fuel filters. I had a similar problem (dying at speed, would idle and accelerate ok) with a 4X4. Turned out to be blocked sintered bronze fuel filter hidden in the carb.

Thanks for the replies. I pulled off the pump and opened it up. The orange rubber valves were deteriorated. I suspect some of this rubber is in my high speed jets. I spoke with a local tech and decided to have the carbs professionally rebuilt and the pump replaced. After looking at the carbs they looked simple enough for me to do, however, I didn't want to take any chances since I have a tournament coming up soon.

Thanks,

John
