Motor "dies" when increasing throttle.

First of all I just found this forum and it looks like a lot of knowledge is being passed around, so hopefully you guys can help me out. I've read many post with similar "symptoms" but here are my particular ones.

1. Motor runs fairly well with hose hooked to it when out of water. Sputters a little but will not die at idle or full throttle.

2. When I get the boat on the water, it runs pretty well at idle and at very low throttle, but when I increase throttle the motor just cuts out and quits. Doesn't sputter or anything, it's like you just turn the key off.

3. Primer ball stays hard at all times when the motor is running.

4. The guy that I bought the boat from says the fuel was left in the tank over winter, but the fuel had been ran out of the motor.

The motor is an '87 110 Evinrude. Coils have been replaced hoping that was the problem. It wasn't. Ran the boat enough to get most of the old gas out. Was gonna put some gas treatment and carb cleaner in the next fillup. What is the next logical step? Hoping it is something as simple as a carb cleaning or clogged filter. What do you guys think?

Re: Motor "dies" when increasing throttle.

Well, I tried a couple things today and hopefully I have fixed the problem. Siphoned all the old gas that was left in it, put on new fuel filter, and added carb cleaner and water treatment to the new tank of gas. Took the boat to the river, and she "ran like a scalded dog". Doesnt' miss. Doesn't die at any throttle position. Hopefully this is all that was needed.
