Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any help you can offer. I am new to the form but have been reading a lot lately.

Basics: 1991 Glassstream 180 with Alpha 1 Gen II. New (Old) powerplant was installed and lists as a 72-73 GM 120 L4 (Serial # 3377984) Tag @bellhouse and Block #2769040 GM above starter.

Was running and shifting fine then suddenly died when shifted from neutral to forward while at idle. engine would not restart.
Pulled out of water and after much research found a switch on the top of valve cover which was connected to the shift cable mech was depressed. I centered the shift mech by hand to release the switch (switch is a small box with metal arm and roller wheel at end which depresses when shifted to forward, like an interupter)
Once it was centered the boat fired up. Back in the water and as soon as I attempt to shift into forward it dies (switch gets depressed). Placed in reverse and no problem, continues to run and reverse engages.
Is this as simple as replacing the switch to fix or might I have a bad lower shift cable or other issue which I'm missing ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't have a Manual #1 yet for the motor and can't locate one on-line. I do have the outdrive manual but can't find the problem. I have confirmed the outdrive as a GEN II by pictures and serial.

Thanks

You need a new lower shift cable.
Pull the drive and disconnect the cable at both ends and move it by hand. It should move very easily. If it binds, replace it.

Ok, I though that might be the problem but have a follow-on question.

I isolated the problem to the cut out switch (roller type). It's moving out of the V-notch when placed in forward. Is this caused by the lower shift cable ?

Yes. That switch should never move unless shifting OUT of gear, not into it. I need that same cable. Any time someone answers a question here, it costs money. I've found it best to never complete my boat restoration, that way nothing will ever break again :)

Thanks so much for the help and the pointer to the FAQ on this subject. I feel smarter already and will attempt the adjustment of the cables prior to replacement. I will post results soon.
