motor dies when throttle pushed

motor will run fine at high speed. when I back off on throttle to go again it dies and will only go to about 200rpms. motor is a 1996 merc. 225 not an efi has carbartors. went 20 miles ran fine til I backed off the throttle.<br /><br />bobmia54
