We have a Mercury 200 offshore 2.5 i think the yr is 85. I noticed some oil leakage from the water intake after a run on land with ears. It was taken out and ran fine at first but then started to drag and overheat. Pulled it out put the ears on and not getting water to exit. would u think seals or jsut the pump?

Smell the oil that leaks. If it stinks like rotten eggs it is gear oil and you have a gearcase seal problem, likely the driveshaft seal in the base of the waterpump. If it smells like gasoline or regular oil, it is residual fuel. In this case you may have a bad fuel pump diaghram allowing raw fuel into crankcase.

Most of those V6 motor have the telltale behind the thermostats. Sometimes they do not heat up enough on the flusher to have a telltale. Put the hose on full and observe how much water leaks out. Now start motor and see if it sucks water in. If water exits prop and grates above antiventilation plate, it is pumping.

What I mean is that until the thermostat opens, the telltale will not have any water flow. If you look at the cylinder heads, you will see the telltale hoses routed to the thermostat covers.
