I have 2 simple questions.
1, I have an older motor on my 78 15' boat, wondering if I need to mix gas and oil when I fun the motor?
2. can anyone tell me what year for sure the motor is?
Serial number J0005032
Thanks a bunch

Re: Motor dumb questions

Welcome to iboats,

Dumb motor question? Hardly, Not asking, would be dumb.
Anyway, yes, your motor is a 2 stroke, water cooled motor. What gas to oil ratio depends on the year of the motor. If you can find the model number of the motor, we can get the year. Typically, you'll use a 50:1 mix of gas to oil (6 gals. of 87 octane gas with 16 oz. of TCW-3 oil).
Look on the powerhead for a quarter sized convex disc. On that disc are the model number.

looks like it says 858950
I do see that is says 50:1, so 16oz per 6 gal?
Thanks

welcome to iboats.

1978 Evinrude 85HP
Champion QL77JC4 at .030
50:1 = one pint for six gallons, 1 cup for three gallons

had it long?

Make sure you use TCW3 oil -- not automotive or two-stroke oil for air-cooled engines. Look for the TCW3 marking on the label. Please don't start another oil war by asking which is the best oil to use. d:)

just incase you don't know also...water cooled means you absolutely have to have water running through the cooling system while the motor is running so in other words don't start the motor out of the water unless you have it hooked up to your garden hose with a motor flushed (muffs, ears etc).

Re: Motor dumb questions

Since your questions suggest that you are very "green" it would be a good idea to not hurry to get this boat into the water till you are certain you understand the requirements. There is a bit more to know than the qantity of oil that goes in the gas.
This is a WATER COOLED motor. If the waterpump is old, tired, worn out, (they have a limited life span) and you run the motor very long it will overheat and may be damaged. Spending the bucks to put a new pump in is good insurance.
The normal way to gage how good a motor is ,is to measure the cylinder pressures. If you can get someone to do this it will tell you the general mechanical condition.
A set of new plugs and a change of gear lube in the leg would also be wise.
Plugging around out on the water with a motor of unknown condition may leave you in need of a tow.
So try it out close to shore and don't fill it with people till you have happy that everything is in good order.
