I have a SW82FBDigital trolling motor. It has been cutting out. It runs for a while then stops as if the breaker is being tripped. I have checked the breakers and bypassed them as well and it does the same thing. Before after running for a fairly long period of time..(across a cove/creek channel) it would cut out. Wait a minute and it would run for a while again. This weekend it got worse. It would run a little in the morning then never run again. Walk out to the boat the next morning and it would run again then quit shortly after. I would say after a good 5 minutes of running. It seems as if there is a short but doesnt really explain why it will only run "cold". I think its getting hot or a part is going out. Any suggestions/Anyone had a similar problem? Thanks, Scotty

Saw similiar question on another site. Can't remimber the cause but had to do with the unit getting to hot. I think it was on the BBC board.

Re: Motor Guide Trolling motor

It could be the internal windings on the motor . . . if there is a short in the motor winding it is possible that it would not show up until the motor was hot, with the temperature change causing a shift in the 'lay' of the cables & insulation inside (and it would re-settle as it cools off, the problem getting worse and more aggravated over time

In a regular 'wound' motor situation you could get it recoiled at a starter repair shop for pretty cheap, but since it's a sealed, watertight unit, you're probably up for a replacement . . .

CC

Course, being a digital motor, it probably has a 'heat sensor' that causes an automatic shutdown to avoid heat damage to the solid state components (all laptops, computers, lotsa cars & outboards, even dimming systems have similar failsafes installed).

It would be worth checking to make sure there is no unnecessary friction involved in turning your prop that might be overheating the unit causing the safety feature to kick in, i.e. remove your prop, remove your old fishing line, remove your buddy's hat & your neighbors cat from the propellor shaft!

Try turning it by hand and make sure that it moves freely w/ little to no friction. Otherwise, see my above post about a replacement!

Hope it's really this easy!
CC

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM FOR A YEAR. IT ENDED UP BEING THE ON OFF SWITCH ON THE FRONT CONSEL THAT CHANGES FROM 12-24 VOLTS. IT WAS CORRODED INSIDE. WHOULD RUN, HEAT UP STOP, RUN HEAT UP AND STOP. REPLACED THE SWITCH AND HAS BEEN FINE SINCE.

Check all the connections of the heavy battery power leads including connections on the battery. Run it till it stops. Then sniff and feel along every inch of wires , switches and plugs. Still no luck ? Older motor ? Brushes or the bearings heating up.

I went inside motor. I didnt see any bearings. I did see the brushes. There was some black powdery substande. Looks like the fine particles from the brushes rubbing? Any ideas? Could it be the module? I guess thats what you call it. The elecrical piece in the motor? Thanks
